A fresh twist has emerged in the political crisis surrounding the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reportedly uploaded Peter Obi’s name as the party’s presidential candidate despite a recent court judgment nullifying the party’s registration.
The development comes just days after a Federal High Court in Lokoja set aside an earlier order that compelled INEC to register the NDC, throwing the party’s future into uncertainty.
However, in a dramatic turn, NDC National Leader, Seriake Dickson, revealed that both his name and that of Peter Obi have already been uploaded to the INEC portal, signaling that the party is pressing ahead with its electoral plans despite the legal setback.
Dickson disclosed that the party has filed an appeal and a stay of execution against the judgment and has formally notified INEC. According to him, the electoral body has granted the party access to its portal, allowing the submission of candidates for the 2027 general elections.
He insisted that the NDC remains a legally recognized political party and noted that its primary elections had already been concluded under INEC’s supervision. He added that documentation for the vice-presidential candidate would be completed shortly.
Urging members and supporters not to panic, Dickson said there is still enough time within INEC’s electoral timetable to upload the names of National Assembly, governorship, and state assembly candidates.
The NDC leader also praised INEC for what he described as its professionalism and neutrality, while expressing confidence that the judiciary would ultimately resolve the dispute in accordance with the law.
With Peter Obi’s name now reportedly appearing on the commission’s portal and legal battles intensifying, the unfolding drama is set to shape the political landscape ahead of the 2027 elections.
