What Happened? Okpebholo Removes Edo SUBEB Chairman, Names Successor

Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has removed the Chairman of the Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Ebanehita Omonzane, from office.

Although the state government has not officially disclosed the reason for her removal, a letter signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, confirmed the nomination of Ayewoh Oyakhilome as her replacement.

Government sources said Omonzane was removed about two months ago and had since been directed not to resume at the board.

The latest development marks another major change in the leadership of Edo SUBEB under Governor Okpebholo, with Ayewoh becoming the fourth person to head the board in less than two years.

Okpebholo had initially appointed Dr. Paddy Iyamu as SUBEB chairman before redeploying him as Commissioner for Education.

In January last year, the governor appointed Onomen Briggs as chairman of the board. About six months later, Briggs was replaced by Omonzane, while Briggs was moved to head the Board for Technical and Vocational Education (BTVE).

With Omonzane now out and Ayewoh nominated as her successor, attention is expected to turn to the Edo State House of Assembly, where his nomination will be considered for confirmation.

The nomination letter described Ayewoh as a dedicated politician and public administrator with a strong passion for effective leadership.

It also noted that he previously served as Executive Chairman of the Edo State Rural Access Roads Agency (RARA), where he was involved in the implementation of government programmes focused on rural connectivity and infrastructure.

His nomination is now expected to proceed to the state legislature for consideration and confirmation.
