Senator representing the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Ireti Kingibe, has raised fresh concerns over the financial activities of the FCT Administration under Minister Nyesom Wike.
Kingibe alleged that Wike has been obtaining loans for the FCT without securing the approval of the National Assembly, a claim that could trigger renewed scrutiny of the minister’s administration.
Speaking during an interview with Channels Television on Tuesday, the senator said records from the Debt Management Office (DMO) showed that loans were taken for the FCT between August 2023 and March 2026.
According to her, despite the reported borrowing, Wike had not appeared before the Senate to seek approval for the loans.
Kingibe said she had already drawn the attention of the Senate leadership to the issue, stressing that lawmakers have a responsibility to oversee and approve borrowing by the FCT.
«“I am definitely saying Wike has been taking loans without the approval of the National Assembly,” Kingibe said.»
She expressed concern that while Wike had appeared before the FCT Committee, she had not seen him come before the Senate to request approval for borrowing.
The senator insisted that National Assembly oversight should go beyond committee-level engagements, particularly when major financial commitments involving the FCT are concerned.
Her allegation is expected to fuel further debate over the financial management of the nation’s capital and the extent of legislative oversight over FCT borrowing.
