2027 Election: Kingibe Warns of “People vs Ruling Party” Showdown

Senator Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has said the 2027 general elections may go beyond party lines, describing it as a contest between ordinary Nigerians and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Speaking during an interview on ARISE Television, Kingibe stressed that the growing economic hardship in the country could intensify public frustration if urgent steps are not taken.
According to her, the only thing sustaining many Nigerians at the moment is the hope that conditions might improve. She warned that if that hope fades, the consequences could be serious.
Kingibe also criticized what she described as deliberate attempts to weaken opposition parties, noting that such actions threaten democratic values. She pointed to rising unemployment, hunger, and lack of opportunities among young people as dangerous triggers that could escalate tensions nationwide.
The senator cautioned that if the situation deteriorates further, public anger would not be directed at one political party alone but at the entire political class. In her view, once frustration reaches a boiling point, party differences may become irrelevant.
She further questioned why the ruling party appears concerned about opposition movements despite claiming widespread support and confidence in winning future elections. According to her, a government that is truly certain of victory should not feel threatened by multiple opposing parties.
On the internal crisis within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Kingibe maintained that party affairs are governed by law and remain the exclusive responsibility of party members. She cited several court rulings affirming that leadership decisions and internal structures are not subject to external interference.
She added that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has consistently monitored and validated the party’s processes, including its National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings and leadership changes, confirming that due process was followed.
Kingibe concluded that ongoing alignments and restructuring within opposition parties are both lawful and part of normal democratic practice.
