Former media aide to the late President Muhammadu Buhari, Lauretta Onochie, has made a fresh political claim that could stir reactions across Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Onochie alleged that people of the Southeast, commonly referred to as Ndigbo, have aligned with the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Atiku Abubakar.
The former presidential aide made the claim in a post on her X handle, where she referred to the former Vice President as Nigeria’s “Incoming President” and expressed optimism that the Southeast would experience industrialisation and transformation under his administration.
According to Onochie, the growing interaction between people from the Southeast and northern political interests is evidence of an emerging political alliance ahead of the 2027 election.
She wrote:
“In case you have been wondering why or did not even know that Ndigbo have aligned with Atiku Abubakar, this is one of the reasons.
“Thank you to our people from the South East who, on a daily basis, come to Abuja to strengthen their friendship and Alliance with the North.
“If you don’t get it, think about it. Still, Igboland will be transformed and industrialised under our very own Incoming President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mazi Atiku Abubakar.”
Onochie ended the post with the hashtags #AtikuIsComing and #excitingnews, while calling for God’s blessing on Nigeria.
Her statement comes at a time when political realignments and coalition-building have intensified ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures and parties exploring possible alliances to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Atiku’s Tinubu Vacation Criticism Sparks Another Reaction
Meanwhile, another controversy involving Atiku has emerged following his criticism of President Bola Tinubu’s three-week vacation in Europe.
Atiku had condemned the President’s decision to embark on the trip, arguing that such a lengthy absence was unnecessary at a time Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.
However, Arise Television anchor Reuben Abati pushed back against the criticism during an edition of The Morning Show.
Abati described the concerns from Atiku’s camp as “embarrassing,” arguing that the issue had not been sufficiently researched.
He maintained that Tinubu was constitutionally entitled to travel and could visit any location of his choice, provided his absence did not exceed the constitutional threshold that would require him to formally transfer presidential powers.
With the 2027 political season gradually gathering momentum, Onochie’s claim about the Southeast and Atiku is likely to fuel further debate over where the region’s political support may ultimately go.
