2027 POLITICAL SHOWDOWN: Wike Reveals What May Be Coming for Atiku, obi

A new political battle plan may already be taking shape ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike offering a glimpse into the calculations behind it.

Speaking in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike disclosed that a fresh political strategy is already in place, while refusing to reveal all the details.

His remarks came as he revisited the controversial 2023 presidential election and explained how the G5 governors calculated their moves against former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

According to Wike, Atiku was considered the bigger threat, rather than Peter Obi. The strategy, he said, was to channel votes towards Obi in parts of the South-South rather than allow Atiku to benefit from the PDP’s traditional support base.

«“Our strategy was that… you vote for Obi to win, in order to deny Atiku the votes.”»

Wike rejected claims that the strategy amounted to election rigging, insisting that political strategy and manipulation of election results were not the same thing.

He also questioned the absence of evidence before the tribunal to support claims that Obi had won Rivers State in the 2023 presidential election.

But perhaps the most intriguing part of Wike’s latest comments is his reference to 2027.

The minister said politicians are already examining who constitutes the biggest threat and how votes can be strategically distributed, while making it clear that he would not disclose the details of the new strategy.

«“We have our strategy in this election… it’s not for us to let the cat out of the bag.”»

With Atiku and Obi featuring prominently in the emerging opposition landscape, Wike’s statement has added another layer to the political calculations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Meanwhile, Wike used his Abuja inspection tour to provide updates on several major infrastructure projects, including roads in Kaura, Life Camp and Gwarinpa, as well as the IBB Golf Course.

He also disclosed that several projects were expected to be completed before the end of the year or early 2027, describing the developments as part of ongoing efforts to transform the Federal Capital Territory.

The minister’s latest comments have placed renewed attention on the political strategies and alliances that could shape the 2027 election landscape.
