Assembly approves introduction of 14 working days paternity leave for male civil servants in Imo

The Imo State House of Assembly has approved the introduction of paternity leave for male officers in the state public civil service.

This ensued on Thursday during the House plenary when the motion was moved by Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Amarchi Iwuanyanwu, and seconded by the Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri.

Presenting the motion, Iwuanyanwu pointed out that the approval is very essential as it will boost morale, foster family cohesion and stability among the male officers in the public service.

He continued, “Most women face post natal depression after child birth and it the love and care of their husbands that can aid them go overcome such challenge within a short period.

“This will also aid the men to judiciously carry out their responsibilities at work as they have within that 14 working day taken care of certain challenges at home that may distract them from focusing on their assignments, ‘ Iwuanyanwu stated.

The Deputy Speaker further pointed out that the Federal Government through the Head of Service of the Federation, Dr. Folasede Yemi-Esan on November 25, 2022, had already issued a circular approving paternity leave for 14 working days in the public service of the Federation for serving male officers whose spouse delivers a baby.

He continued that States like Lagos and Enugu States have keyed into such, adding that it will only be proper if Imo State will follow suit, as it is a welcome development.

Iwuanyanwu expressed optimism that he has no doubt this will be domesticated in the state, as Imo he said, is a progressive State with a progressive Governor who is always eager to prioritize on the welfare of the public servants.

Speaking favour of the motion were Majority Leader of the House; Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, Chief Whip; Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, Deputy Majority Leader; Rt. Hon. Sam Osuji, former Speaker of the House; Rt. Hon. Kennedy Ibeh, Ngor Okpala lawmaker; Rt. Hon. Obinna Egu, Ohaji Egbema member; Hon. Francis Osuoha, Onuimo, Hon. James Esile, among others.

They reiterated that it will aid create and maintain the bound between the spouses, and their babies.

They further commended the presenter of the motion, Iwuanyanwu saying it is a laudable.

As there was no one against the motion the Speaker, Rt Hon Chike Olemgbe put it to vote, and the Ayes had it.
