Tinubu Govt in $9m US Lobbying Storm Over Alleged Bid to Calm Trump, Republicans

Fresh controversy has erupted over Nigeria’s foreign policy amid allegations that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid as much as $9 million to a U.S. Republican-linked lobbying firm to defuse mounting tensions with former American President Donald Trump and influential conservative lawmakers.

According to media reports, the Nigerian government allegedly engaged a Washington-based lobbyist with strong Republican ties to counter negative perceptions of Nigeria’s security situation and avert potential diplomatic or military fallout from the United States. The move is said to be linked to growing concerns in Washington over terrorism, religious violence, and governance challenges in Nigeria.

The reported contract is believed to span six months, with an initial payment of about $4.5 million, while a second tranche would raise the total value of the deal to $9 million.

Under the alleged agreement, the lobbying firm is expected to interface with U.S. lawmakers, policy influencers, and individuals close to Trump to project the Tinubu administration as committed to tackling insecurity, safeguarding religious freedom, and strengthening cooperation with Western allies.

The reports surface amid strained U.S.–Nigeria relations, including warnings of possible American military action against extremist targets in northern Nigeria and sustained criticism from U.S. conservative groups over alleged persecution of Christian communities.

These developments have reportedly intensified pressure on Abuja as Washington reassesses its security partnerships across Africa.

At home, the alleged deal has drawn sharp criticism from opposition figures, who accuse the Tinubu government of prioritising international image management over addressing insecurity within the country. Allies of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar described the move as a misplacement of priorities, arguing that funds allegedly spent on foreign lobbyists should instead be channelled into strengthening Nigeria’s security framework and supporting victims of violence.

Although the federal government has yet to issue a detailed response to the claims, the reports have reignited debate over transparency, accountability, and the increasing reliance on foreign lobbyists by African governments to influence U.S. policy.

As scrutiny grows, analysts say the controversy underscores deeper questions about Nigeria’s diplomatic strategy and the delicate balance between managing international perception and confronting domestic security realities.
