The All Progressives Congress (APC) has suffered a major setback in Rivers State following the declaration of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Olaka Nwogu, as the winner of the Rivers South-East Senatorial District by-election.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced on Sunday that Nwogu secured a resounding victory, polling 47,961 votes to defeat his closest rival from the APC, who garnered just 1,647 votes.
The Action Alliance (AA) finished third with 1,175 votes, while the Labour Party (LP) came a distant fourth after securing only 367 votes.
The by-election, conducted on Saturday, was held to fill the vacant Senate seat following the death of former lawmaker, Senator Barinada Mpigi.
Nwogu’s overwhelming margin of victory has been described by political observers as one of the most decisive electoral outcomes in the state’s recent political history, dealing a significant blow to the ruling APC’s ambitions in the senatorial district.
With the result now officially declared by INEC, attention is expected to shift to the political implications of the outcome and what it could mean for the balance of power ahead of future elections in Rivers State.
