A former First Lady of Ondo State who hails from Owerri In Imo State (a. k. a. Ada Owerri 1), Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, has indicated interest in contesting for the Owerri Senatorial District seat in the 2027 general election, on the platform of the Labour Party (LP).

She made her intention known in Owerri, the state capital at the weekend. It could be noted that Anyanwu-Akeredolu also contested the seat in the 2023 general election in Imo State on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, APC. But her aspiration was aborted.

The Imo East Senatorial District comprises nine local governments, namely : Owerri Municipal Council, Owerri North, Owerri West, Mbaitoli, Ikeduru, Aboh Mbaise, Ahiazu Mbaise, Ezinihitte Mbaise, and Ngor Okpala.

Addressing a press conference in her Owerri residence, she reiterated that her interest is borne out of her earnest desire and the love she has for her people of Owerri, saying she has the capacity to run the race and win, maintaining that the capacity is all encompassing intellectually, physically, materially and otherwise.

She said, “I’m not in the race to remove sugar from anybody’s mouth. I’m going there to work out the synergy that will benefit the people of Owerri Zone.

“What Ndi Owere require now is quality leadership —leadership that is also caring,” stressing that she is not going there to grab and put in her pocket, but to reach out to other persons and make sure that her constituents are well represented, that she is already content with what she has.

She said she is already well-made, not going there for a meal ticket, but to bring home the dividends of democracy, pointing out that even her husband knew this aspect of her and nicknamed her a “village girl” and supported her tremendously all the way in every Christmas as she must return to her maiden home to be with her people eat, dine, and wine with them and offer whatever she has for them.

She pointed out what she termed a “disconnect between the National Assembly with the state representatives, adding that the disconnect makes their activities overlap to do projects others are supposed to do like a National Assembly member build a town hall which a State House member, a council chairman, or even a councillor could happily build.

“What the national legislators should do are bigger projects that should address the people’s major needs.

The Ada Owerri 1 regretted that not enough remedy has been injected into the lethal killer breast cancer disease, assured that she will raise a bill that will make it possible for her fellow womenfolk to access regular checkups not only to nip the ailment in the bud but also to access free treatment.

“When women have a place where they can go and access treatment free of financial commitment, they’ll periodically examine their breasts and get early treatment,” she stated.

She pointed out that primary healthcare via Primary Health Centres should be properly equipped and be made available to women and the necessary awareness should be created, describing it as ‘Catastrophic disease.’

Dr Anyanwu-Akeredolu commended the Imo State Government over its Health Insurance Scheme and urged the government to improve on the scheme to cover the expensive disease.

She commended the Labour Party Chairman, Nenadi Esther Usman for her ability in driving the party, saying that as a gender-sensitive person, it is Usman’s gender that attracted her to the party.
