BREAKING: Court Verdict on Jonathan Contesting 2027 Presidential Election

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ruled that former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan is eligible to contest the 2027 presidential election.
The ruling followed a suit filed by Johnmary Jideobi, who sought an order preventing Jonathan from presenting himself as a candidate for any political party in the 2027 election.
Jideobi had also asked the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting, processing or publishing Jonathan’s name as a presidential candidate, citing provisions of Sections 1(1), (2), (3) and 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution.
The case came days after a faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, reportedly granted Jonathan a waiver and endorsed him as the party’s sole presidential candidate.
Delivering judgment on Tuesday, Justice Peter Lifu held that Jonathan remains qualified to participate in the 2027 presidential election.
