With the countdown to the 2027 presidential election gathering momentum, Nigeria’s major political parties have intensified behind-the-scenes consultations over who will lead their nationwide campaign operations ahead of the official commencement of campaigns on August 19.
At the centre of the unfolding political chess game are former governors and influential party leaders being considered for the powerful position of Director-General (DG) of the various presidential campaign organisations.
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is reportedly favouring former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Tambuwal to spearhead Atiku Abubakar’s presidential campaign. Party insiders say Tambuwal, who successfully served as Atiku’s campaign DG in 2023, remains the leading contender, although final approval is expected after consultations among opposition coalition leaders.
Sources also revealed that Tambuwal is expected to work closely with Atiku’s running mate, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, in coordinating the opposition’s nationwide strategy.
Meanwhile, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is weighing two influential figures—Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma and former Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura—to lead President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.
While no final decision has been reached, party insiders disclosed that Uzodimma currently enjoys strong backing from key APC stakeholders due to his role as Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum and his strategic influence within the party. However, Al-Makura also remains a formidable contender because of his loyalty and longstanding contributions to the APC.
The Labour Party (LP) has confirmed that it has already selected a campaign DG but is keeping the identity under wraps until the full campaign structure is officially unveiled before August 19.
According to the party, its campaign will rely heavily on the support of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), with plans to deploy thousands of labour members as polling unit agents across the country.
The Social Democratic Party (SDP) also disclosed that it has concluded its campaign strategy and will soon unveil its campaign leadership, promising a formidable structure built around its presidential candidate, Adewole Adebayo.
Similarly, the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) is finalising nominations for its campaign council, with party leaders promising an inclusive structure that reflects Nigeria’s geopolitical diversity while focusing on grassroots mobilisation rather than expensive political rallies.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), on its part, said consultations are still ongoing and that the party will announce its campaign DG after concluding internal deliberations.
With the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) fixing August 19 as the official commencement date for presidential campaigns, political parties are racing to put their campaign machinery in place.
Political observers believe the choice of campaign directors-general could prove decisive, as they will oversee mobilisation, fundraising, media strategy, logistics, and coordination across the country’s six geopolitical zones in what is shaping up to be one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested presidential elections.
