Just Days To Osun Poll, GOMEP-NG Blasts EFCC Over ‘Shocking’ Account Freeze, Demands Urgent Action

Abuja – The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has strongly condemned the reported freezing of an Osun State Government account by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), describing the move as alarming and questioning its timing just days before the state’s governorship election.

In a statement jointly signed by its President, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, and National Secretary, Mr. Clinton Uba, the Guild expressed concern over reports that the affected First Bank account is allegedly used to pay workers’ salaries, warning that the action could have serious implications for governance and public confidence.

While reaffirming its support for the fight against corruption, GOMEP-NG stressed that no individual or institution should be above the law. However, it maintained that anti-graft agencies must carry out their constitutional responsibilities with fairness, transparency and strict adherence to due process, particularly during politically sensitive periods.

The organisation warned that restricting an account reportedly used for salary payments could trigger unnecessary public anxiety and disrupt critical government operations if workers and other statutory obligations are affected.

“It is important that anti-corruption agencies discharge their constitutional responsibilities in a manner that does not erode public confidence or create the impression of political interference. The timing of such actions is as important as the actions themselves,” the statement read.

GOMEP-NG therefore called on the EFCC to immediately clarify the legal basis for the reported restriction and ensure that any ongoing investigation is conducted in line with the rule of law without causing hardship to innocent workers or disrupting essential public services.

The Guild also urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to consider postponing the Osun State governorship election, arguing that the recent development has raised concerns about whether all political parties are operating on a level playing field. According to the organisation, the credibility of any election depends not only on the voting process but also on the existence of conditions that convince the public the contest is free, fair and impartial.

Furthermore, GOMEP-NG condemned any institution or individual allegedly using the name or authority of the Federal Government in a manner capable of creating fear, unrest or unnecessary tension among citizens, stressing that public institutions must avoid actions or perceptions capable of undermining public trust and national stability.

The organisation further urged all government institutions to uphold professionalism, impartiality and accountability, noting that Nigerians expect transparency and fairness from every arm of government, especially in the period leading up to elections.

It also appealed to all stakeholders to remain committed to democratic principles and allow due process to prevail in the interest of peace, stability and good governance.
