Former Kano State Governor and 2027 NDC vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, has finally opened up on why he chose to join forces with Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
Kwankwaso said the decision was driven by a shared desire to pursue a different approach to governance and address what he described as the pressing challenges facing Nigerians.
In a statement released on Thursday as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, Kwankwaso said Nigeria had reached a critical point, pointing to rising food prices, unemployment, high business costs and insecurity as major concerns.
He urged Nigerians to reflect on the state of the country and the kind of nation they want to leave for future generations.
According to him, insecurity remains a major threat, with terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violence disrupting communities and livelihoods.
“Our farmers need security to return to their farms, our children need safe schools, and every Nigerian deserves to live without fear,” he said.
Kwankwaso also identified education, healthcare, infrastructure and institutional reforms as areas requiring urgent attention.
He stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of public resources, alongside stronger institutions and improved social services.
Explaining his decision to partner with Obi, Kwankwaso said the alliance was not based on regional, religious or personal interests.
“This is why I have chosen to work with His Excellency, Peter Obi, on the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket. Our partnership is not about region, religion or personal ambition. It is about Nigeria,” he stated.
He said the proposed administration would focus on accountable leadership, economic opportunities and inclusiveness, particularly for young Nigerians.
Kwankwaso called on youths, women, workers, farmers, entrepreneurs and professionals to become actively involved in the political process.
He further urged political parties and supporters to avoid divisive campaigns and instead focus on issues affecting Nigerians.
“Let us move beyond politics of division and focus on the issues that affect our daily lives. Let us demand accountability, competence and results from those entrusted with public office,” he said.
Describing the 2027 election as a defining moment for Nigeria, Kwankwaso urged supporters of the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket to campaign peacefully and responsibly.
He ultimately called on Nigerians to support the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket and other NDC candidates in what he described as a mission to rebuild the country.
