Former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, has identified what she described as the major achievement of President Bola Tinubu’s administration so far, while warning that Nigerians are yet to feel its impact.
Speaking on News Central Television, Ezekwesili acknowledged that the government had made progress in stabilising the foreign exchange market by adhering more closely to market principles.
However, she argued that the improvement in macroeconomic stability had not translated into better living conditions for the average Nigerian.
According to her, the country is “not out of the woods,” as poverty remains widespread and the cost of living continues to rise.
“The only thing that, as I said at the beginning, we can give to them is that they are getting a handle on macroeconomic stability,” she said.
Ezekwesili noted that the naira’s foreign exchange volatility had become quieter under the current policy direction, but expressed concerns over the continued high cost of living.
She also criticised the government’s handling of inflation, arguing that the sharp increase in prices was avoidable and linked to a combination of policy decisions.
The former minister stressed that Nigeria’s economic performance should not be judged solely by macroeconomic indicators, pointing instead to deeper structural problems affecting productivity, job creation and household incomes.
She identified low productivity as one of the major obstacles to sustainable economic growth and improved living standards.
Ezekwesili further argued that policy choices had contributed to structural weaknesses that continue to limit economic opportunities for Nigerians.
