ABUJA — Nigerians may begin to feel some relief in transportation costs from October 1, 2026, as President Bola Tinubu announced plans to reduce transport fares through the National Affordable Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) Transit Programme.
The development was disclosed on Saturday in a statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
According to the statement, Tinubu had on August 27 met with the governors of the 36 states, where they agreed on measures aimed at achieving measurable reductions in transportation costs from October.
“From October 1, more Nigerians should begin to see measurable reductions in transportation costs,” the President was quoted as saying.
Tinubu said an implementation committee had subsequently been established under the auspices of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum to coordinate the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme.
The committee is chaired by Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
The President said the committee, PI-CNG and EV, state governments and other stakeholders were already working to identify priority transport corridors, determine suitable interventions and put the necessary arrangements in place.
He noted that the effort had become increasingly urgent in view of the current global energy crisis.
The planned intervention is expected to use CNG-powered transportation and other measures to help reduce the cost of commuting for Nigerians from October.
