Peter Obi, presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised fresh concerns about his safety ahead of the 2027 general elections, saying he is uncertain whether he will still be alive when Nigerians go to the polls.
The former Anambra State governor made the disclosure during an interview on Arise TV on Thursday while speaking about the political atmosphere ahead of the election and the need for a peaceful democratic process.
Obi said he had been subjected to petitions and investigations in different places, adding that he was unsure what could happen to him before the election.
“As I speak to you, I have also been petitioned, I’ve been investigated everywhere. Like I said before, I’m not even sure whether I’ll still be alive at the end of this,” he said.
The NDC presidential candidate did not provide specific details about the petitions or investigations he referenced.
He said he was relying on God for protection and urged political leaders to avoid actions capable of creating tension ahead of the 2027 election.
“I’m praying to God for His protection because at this stage, I’m not sure what is happening,” Obi added.
Obi also appealed to state governors to provide a level playing field for presidential candidates and other political aspirants, arguing that governors could support their preferred candidates without preventing opponents from campaigning in their states.
“Some of them will be campaigning for presidency tomorrow. They will be campaigning for other offices tomorrow. Let’s have peace,” he said.
The former Anambra governor recalled that during his tenure, politicians from opposition parties were allowed to campaign in the state, including those supporting candidates opposed to him.
Obi has previously expressed similar concerns about his safety. In July, during an interview with media personality Chude Jideonwo, he said he might not be alive by the time of the 2027 election while alleging that his activities and business interests were being frustrated. Those allegations were not accompanied by evidence in the interview.
His latest remarks have again drawn attention to concerns surrounding the political environment ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
