The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced plans to shut down the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri, Imo State, for 25 days, raising concerns over flight schedules and travel arrangements in the South-East.
The proposed closure is expected to begin on October 20, 2026, although FAAN disclosed that the date is still awaiting final confirmation.
In a statement released on Thursday and signed by its Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire, the authority explained that the temporary shutdown would allow engineers to carry out essential repairs and resurfacing work on the airport’s runway.
According to FAAN, parts of the runway have deteriorated, with potholes and widespread cracks affecting its surface. The situation has reportedly been worsened by recent heavy rainfall.
The planned rehabilitation will involve repairing damaged sections, treating cracks and resurfacing affected areas to improve the runway’s condition and ensure safer airport operations.
Beyond the immediate repairs, FAAN disclosed that the project would also include extending the runway to enable the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft.
The expansion is expected to increase the airport’s operational capacity and improve its ability to handle growing air traffic to and from the South-East.
FAAN said the project was particularly important ahead of the Christmas travel season, when passenger numbers and flight activities are expected to increase as Nigerians travel to reunite with their families.
The authority also noted that the planned improvements would enhance passenger comfort and make air travel through the airport more convenient.
Meanwhile, passengers scheduled to travel through Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport during the proposed closure period have been advised to contact their respective airlines for updates on flight schedules and possible alternative travel arrangements.
Travellers are also encouraged to monitor official announcements for confirmation of the closure date and further details about the rehabilitation project.
