DSS Tracks Down Maina’s Son After Secret Return To Nigeria

Abuja | October 17, 2026

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly arrested Faisal Maina, son of former Pension Reform Task Team chairman Abdulrasheed Maina, following intelligence reports that he had secretly returned to Nigeria.

Faisal was reportedly apprehended in the Karsana area of Abuja before being handed over to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further action relating to his previous money laundering conviction.

A security source familiar with the operation disclosed that the arrest followed intelligence gathered by the DSS after his return to the country.

According to the source, security operatives tracked Faisal to Karsana, where he was arrested and subsequently transferred to the EFCC.

Why Faisal Maina Was Wanted

Faisal had been wanted since 2020 following his prosecution by the EFCC over allegations of money laundering linked to funds allegedly connected to his father.

In October 2021, the Federal High Court in Abuja convicted him of money laundering and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.

The case centred on allegations that Faisal used a fictitious bank account operated in the name of Alhaji Faisal Farm 2 to conceal funds allegedly linked to the diversion of pension money.

During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence of approximately ₦58.1 million deposited into the account between October 2013 and June 2019.

According to the prosecution, the funds were withdrawn by Faisal and his father during the period under investigation.

The trial was presided over by Justice Okon Abang, who found Faisal guilty of the charges.

Court of Appeal Reduced His Sentence

However, the case took a new turn in November 2022 when the Court of Appeal reviewed Faisal’s conviction and reduced his prison sentence from 14 years to seven years.

Although the appellate court upheld the conviction, it ruled that the trial court should not have imposed the maximum sentence on a first-time offender.

The reduction in sentence left the conviction intact, raising fresh questions about the legal implications of his reported return and arrest.

EFCC Expected To Determine Next Steps

Following his reported transfer to the EFCC, attention has shifted to the commission over the next steps in handling the case.

Authorities have yet to publicly clarify Faisal’s precise legal status following the arrest or explain the specific action the commission intends to take in light of the existing conviction and the Court of Appeal’s decision.

It also remains unclear how long he had been in Nigeria before his arrest or whether anyone assisted him during the period he was reportedly away.

Arrest Revives Memories Of Nigeria’s Pension Fund Scandal

Faisal’s arrest has also brought renewed attention to the controversial pension fund case involving his father, Abdulrasheed Maina.

The former chairman of the defunct Pension Reform Task Team faced prosecution over allegations involving the diversion and laundering of pension funds meant for retired public servants.

The scandal attracted widespread public attention because of concerns about the welfare of pensioners who depended on their retirement benefits after years of service.

Maina was subsequently convicted in a separate case involving money laundering connected to the pension fund allegations.

The investigations also triggered scrutiny of financial transactions, bank accounts and properties allegedly linked to him and members of his family.

With Faisal now reportedly in EFCC custody, the central question is what legal steps the authorities will take next and how his return will affect the enforcement of his existing conviction.

Further clarification from the EFCC and other relevant authorities is expected to provide more details about the case.
