Anger over persistent insecurity erupted in Zamfara State on Sunday as youths in Gwashi community, Bukkuyum Local Government Area, reportedly chased away the state Deputy Governor, Mani Malam Mummuni, during a visit to sympathise with victims of bandit attacks.
The deputy governor had visited the troubled community to commiserate with residents and offer support to families affected by the attacks. However, what was expected to be a condolence visit quickly turned chaotic as angry youths confronted him and his entourage.
The youths reportedly expressed their frustration over repeated attacks and the worsening security situation in Gwashi and neighbouring communities.
A video from the scene showed the situation escalating, with security operatives attached to the deputy governor reportedly fleeing and abandoning their vehicle amid the tension.
Rising Insecurity Sparks Anger
Gwashi and other communities in Bukkuyum LGA have suffered repeated bandit attacks, leaving residents increasingly worried about their safety.
The insecurity has also affected movement between neighbouring villages and access to local markets, disrupting the daily activities of residents.
The confrontation comes just days after a deadly attack on traders travelling under military escort in the state.
Reports indicated that the traders were travelling from Gwashi to Nasarawa Market in Bukkuyum LGA on Saturday, October 10, when armed men ambushed them at about 2 p.m.
The attack reportedly claimed the lives of approximately 20 people, including four soldiers, three police officers, one officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and 12 civilians.
Nineteen other people were reportedly injured in the incident.
Six Islamic Clerics Abducted in Separate Attack
In another security incident, six Islamic clerics were reportedly abducted about a month earlier along the Dakko-Damri feeder road in Bakura Local Government Area while travelling to Talata Mafara.
The state police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, confirmed the abduction, stating that the victims, all imams, were intercepted by armed bandits.
The latest confrontation involving the deputy governor highlights the growing frustration among residents over repeated attacks and the challenges facing communities in Zamfara.
For many residents, the central concern remains the urgent need for effective security measures to protect lives, restore confidence and allow people to move freely without fear of bandit attacks.
