For food security: Imo Assembly call on Livestock Ministry for urgent revival of State Songhai farm

In view of the motion moved by the Member Representing Ohaji/Egbema State Constituency, Hon. Uzoma Francis Osuoha, the Imo State House of Assembly has called on the Ministry of Livestock Development to urgently delve into resuscitating the Imo State Songhai farm.

The motion which was presented by the lawmaker during the House plenary on Wednesday, was seconded by the Chief Whip of the House, Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, and co-sponsored by eight other legislators.

Throwing more light on the motion, the Ohaji/Egbema representative pointed out that the farm has been a shadow of its self as it has been abandoned for years after it ran for few years since it’s inception in 2004.

Osuoha noted that erosion has taken over part of the lands, and private individuals have also taken part of the land too for their personal businesses.

He recalled that the farm where diverse activities of livestock; fishery, animal husbandry, and other farming activities were taking place created employment opportunities for the people, mostly ensured that there was food security in the state, and provides those produce at a reduced cost to the people.

He continued that the farm had been of great help to the people of the state, and should be made to continue so especially during this period where there is economic situation in the nation.

He further revealed that the Executive Secretary/CEO of National Agricultural Land Development Authority (NALDA), Prince Paul Ikonne has in 2022 disclosed to His Excellency, Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Hope Uzodimma, that the abandoned Songhai Farm Estate in Nekede, Owerri has received Federal approval for rehabilitation in partnership with the Imo State Government.

He therefore called on the ministry to utilize the opportunity and ensure that the farm is restored to begin serving the people ones again.

Speaking in favour of the motion were – Majority leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, Chief Whip, Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, Oru West legislator, Rt. Hon. Dominic Ezerioha, Ezinihitte representative, Hon. Henry Agbasonu, Ehime Mbano, Hon. Ben Ozoemenam, Mbaitoli, Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, Orlu, Hon. Ikenna Ihezuo, Nkwerre, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu, among others.

They all reiterated how vital the farm to the state, and urged for its immediate restoration.

As there was no one against the motion, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe put it to vote, and the Ayes had it.

He therefore directed the Clerk of the House to convey the resolution of the House to the appropriate quarters.
