Wema Bank Unveils a Smarter ALAT—Why This Upgrade Matters

Wema Bank has unveiled a major upgrade to its flagship digital banking platform, ALAT by Wema, signaling a bold new chapter in Nigeria’s digital banking space.
Branded “ALAT: The Evolution,” the upgraded app introduces advanced features designed to make banking faster, smarter, and more intuitive. The development reinforces Wema Bank’s reputation as Nigeria’s most innovative bank and the pioneer of Africa’s first fully digital banking platform.
At the heart of the upgrade are cutting-edge tools such as voice banking, which allows users to carry out transactions using natural voice commands through a branded SAW feature, and Tap and Pay, a secure contactless payment option that enables seamless transactions. The platform also introduces uptime prediction technology, giving customers advance notice of service availability to improve reliability and transparency.
According to Wema Bank, the new features are designed to simplify everyday banking while anticipating customer needs in real time, underscoring the institution’s focus on efficiency, trust, and customer-centric innovation.
Speaking on the launch, the bank’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Moruf Oseni, described the upgrade as more than just a technical improvement.
“ALAT: The Evolution is more than an upgrade. It is a clear demonstration of our commitment to redefining digital banking in Africa. By understanding the future of banking and listening closely to our customers, we have created a platform that is smart, intelligent, and dependable,” Oseni said.
He added that the new version strengthens Wema Bank’s promise to deliver innovations that positively impact how people live, work, and transact daily.
The transition for existing users is seamless, as customers can simply update the ALAT app via the Google Play Store or Apple App Store and continue using their current login details. All account information and transaction histories remain intact, while users gain immediate access to the new features. New customers can also onboard easily by downloading the app and selecting the “Get Started” option.
Chief Digital Officer, Olusegun Adeniyi, noted that the upgrade reflects the bank’s long-term digital vision.
“By integrating voice banking, contactless payments, and predictive reliability, we are delivering a platform that responds intelligently to customer needs. This upgrade positions ALAT as a truly adaptive and consistently available digital bank,” he said.
Built on principles of speed, intelligence, and user-focused design, ALAT: The Evolution aims to redefine how customers experience digital banking in Nigeria and beyond.
With this latest move, Wema Bank continues to strengthen its position as a digital-first financial institution, empowering individuals and businesses to navigate an increasingly digital economy with confidence and convenience.
