A fresh political controversy has erupted on Nigeria’s 66th Independence Day after African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain and Ovation Magazine publisher, Dele Momodu, took aim at President Bola Tinubu over his national address.
Momodu, in a post on his verified X handle on Thursday, accused the President of turning a day meant for national celebration into one of lamentation.
The media mogul was particularly critical of Tinubu’s use of a medical analogy to describe Nigeria’s condition before his administration, likening the country to a cancer patient that had been kept alive with painkillers before he came in as a “celebrated surgeon.”
Momodu questioned the comparison, arguing that the situation confronting Nigeria when Tinubu assumed office was not as severe as the President portrayed it.
“Today is supposed to be a day of celebration, but your speech turned it into a day of lamentation,” he stated.
He added that the President was expected to stabilise the country rather than worsen its condition.
“At the time you assumed power, Nigeria probably had stage-two cancer, at the worst,” Momodu wrote.
He also raised concerns about Nigeria’s rising revenues and borrowing, alongside what he described as increasing insecurity, escalating poverty and political insensitivity.
The remarks have added a new layer to the debate surrounding President Tinubu’s Independence Day address, particularly his assessment of the country’s economic and security challenges and the reforms introduced since he took office.
