Reps Member Dies Hours After Critical Hospital Visit

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yaya Tongo, who represented Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency of Gombe State, has died.
Tongo, who was elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2023 general elections before later defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in March 2026, reportedly passed away on Friday, June 12, 2026, at Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja.

The sad news was disclosed by former Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, through a post on his verified X account.
Announcing the lawmaker’s passing, Pantami revealed that he had visited Tongo earlier in the day alongside Alhaji Bappa Ahmad Abdullahi and other associates while the lawmaker was receiving treatment at the Abuja-based hospital.
According to Pantami, he spent about 20 minutes with the lawmaker, prayed for his recovery, and also met with members of his family, including two of his children and other relatives.
The former minister said he became deeply concerned after observing the lawmaker’s health condition, describing it as critical.
Pantami disclosed that only a few hours after leaving the hospital, he received news that Tongo had passed away.
Mourning the deceased, he described the loss as painful and prayed for Allah to forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and comfort his family during the difficult period.
As of the time of filing this report, the leadership of the House of Representatives had not issued an official statement regarding the lawmaker’s death.
Hon. Tongo was among the lawmakers elected into the 10th National Assembly in 2023 and represented the Kwami/Funakaye/Gombe Federal Constituency until his death.
