President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed Nigeria for a three-week vacation in Europe, even as political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections begin to gather momentum.
The President left Abuja on Sunday for the break, with the Presidency describing the trip as an opportunity for him to rest, recharge and prepare for what is expected to be an intense period of political activities.
However, the Presidency has stressed that Tinubu’s vacation will not mean a complete break from the affairs of government.
Speaking with journalists shortly after the President’s departure, his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, explained that Tinubu had been heavily engaged with national affairs over the past several months.
According to Dare, the President had spent about six to seven months dealing with critical issues, particularly the economy, security and other major matters affecting the country.
He said the commencement of the political season made it necessary for the President to take time to “refuel” before the demanding months ahead.
Dare said:
«“The President has had several months, six, seven months of being engaged with state matters. We’ve seen monumental changes, monumental decisions taken with our security, with our economy and so many other things as pertains to the running of the affairs of this country.»
«“And at this point, the campaign season has just started. We have four, five months of serious campaigning. Of course, governance will still continue.»
«“And at this point, it’s important that the President also refuels. And even though he’s going on leave, we know that he’ll be engaged with state matters on a daily basis.”»
Tinubu To Remain In Touch With Government
The presidential aide further assured Nigerians that government activities would continue uninterrupted throughout the President’s absence from the country.
Dare disclosed that Tinubu would remain in regular contact with ministers, service chiefs and other officials handling critical national responsibilities.
“He will receive briefings from his ministers, from the service chiefs as the case may be, and from every other person who is handling very key decisions in our country,” he added.
First Stop: London
Meanwhile, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that Tinubu’s first destination would be London, United Kingdom.
Onanuga said the President would return to Nigeria at the end of the three-week vacation and resume his activities, including preparations for the campaign ahead of the January 2027 presidential election.
The development comes as political calculations and realignments intensify across Nigeria, with parties and presidential contenders increasingly positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 contest.
