As political calculations ahead of the 2027 presidential election gather momentum, the G-100 opposition coalition has intensified efforts to select a consensus candidate capable of challenging President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the polls.
The coalition has reportedly narrowed its attention to four prominent presidential hopefuls: former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Adewale Adebayo.
The development signals a potentially significant shift in opposition politics as political parties and their leaders explore ways to present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming election.
The National Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Sadiq Gombe, disclosed the development on Wednesday in Abuja during the inauguration of the coalition’s Legal and Media Committees.
According to Gombe, strategic engagements among the participating parties and presidential aspirants are progressing, with direct discussions already underway to facilitate the emergence of a consensus candidate.
He expressed optimism that significant breakthroughs could be achieved before the end of 2026.
Four Presidential Hopefuls in the Spotlight
Among those reportedly being considered for the opposition coalition’s presidential ticket are Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Donald Duke and Adewale Adebayo.
Their possible emergence as contenders for the coalition’s endorsement could trigger fresh political calculations as opposition leaders seek a candidate capable of uniting diverse political interests and mounting a formidable challenge against Tinubu in 2027.
However, the coalition has yet to announce its preferred candidate, as consultations and negotiations continue.
The participating political parties include the SDP, ADC, Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Allied Peoples Movement (APM).
Why G-100 Is Setting Up Committees
Beyond the search for a consensus candidate, the coalition has inaugurated two committees to strengthen its operations and address potential challenges ahead of the election.
The Legal Committee, comprising national legal advisers, will examine constitutional provisions, electoral laws and relevant Supreme Court judgments to ensure that the alliance complies with legal requirements and avoids possible legal complications.
The Media and Publicity Committee, made up of national publicity secretaries and campaign spokespersons, will coordinate the coalition’s communications, public messaging and media engagements.
The committees are expected to play important roles in ensuring that the coalition’s political negotiations and public activities are properly coordinated.
Economic Hardship, Insecurity Drive Opposition Push
Gombe highlighted the economic difficulties and security challenges facing Nigerians, arguing that the country needs a credible and united political alternative.
He maintained that the coalition’s objective is to place national interest above individual political ambitions and build a platform capable of responding to the concerns of Nigerians.
The coalition’s efforts come amid growing political manoeuvres ahead of the 2027 general election, with opposition figures exploring possible alliances to strengthen their chances against the ruling party.
The Big Question: Who Will Emerge?
Although Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Donald Duke and Adewale Adebayo are among the names under consideration, the final decision will depend on the outcome of ongoing consultations among coalition leaders and the aspirants.
With G-100 expressing confidence that major developments could emerge before the end of the year, attention is now focused on whether the opposition parties can overcome competing ambitions and agree on a single candidate.
Will the coalition succeed in producing a consensus candidate, and which of the four presidential hopefuls will eventually emerge as its preferred choice to challenge Tinubu in 2027?
For now, the negotiations continue, leaving Nigeria’s political landscape waiting for the next major announcement.
