The Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma has commended the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, and other members of the state House of Assembly, saying that they have really lived up to expectation for their one year in office.
The Governor made the commendation on Wednesday when he visited the House to join the lawmakers in marking their one year in office.
In his address, governor Uzodimma who averred that he was delighted to be part of the celebration pointed out, “This Assembly has distinguished itself as a responsible, responsive House geared towards engendering trust and hope among the people.
“I congratulate the Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe, the principle officers and all other members of the House for the success they have recorded so far.
“You have indeed acquitted yourselves creditably in the last one year given your vibrancy, resourcefulness, and being alive to your responsibility.
“You have justified the confidence your constituents reposed in you by working acidiously towards achieving your core mandate of making laws, mending existing ones, among others.
“The motions (64) and the bills (12) you have passed shows sense of purpose and your being in tune with my vision for a New Imo.
“This vision of a new Imo is what has welded all of us together. We have been chosen by the people to individually and collectively serve them, and as servants, we are expected to be humble, focused, committed, and dedicated to the discharge of our various duties, be it as the executive, legislative or Judiciary Arm of Government.
“The service we render should be selfless, total, add value to the lives of the people, be devoid of pecuniary interest, and expectations. It should be encouraged by sacrifice and driven by passion to better the lots of Imolites.
“Many people have sat on this same seat, but are not remembered today, because they have not really impacted humanity. So I urge you all to continue with the good work, and endeavor to make a mark through selfless service so posterity will remember you for that, ‘governor Uzodimma advised’.
Speaking earlier, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe stated that It gives him joy to see that they have successfully completed the first session of the tenth House, which ended on the 16th of June, 2024.
Olemgbe who recalled that the House was inaugurated on Friday, 16th day of June, 2023, noted that they have in their legislative activities engaged in enactment of Laws, passage of motions, committee oversight, appropriation, confirmation of executive appointments and redressing constituents’ grievances amongst others.
He further disclosed that they have in this first session of the House received a total of Eighteen (18) bills, twelve (12) were passed into Law, three (3) are pending at the House Committee stage, two (2) are pending for Committee of the Whole while one (1) is pending at the first Reading Stage.
He continued, “In like manner, Sixty Six (66) motions were presented and moved at the floor of the tenth House out of which Sixty-Four (64) were passed, one (1) still pending while one (1) was stepped down.
“We have sponsored motions that are geared towards making Imolites feel the impact of good governance, for instance H.A.M. 58: Motion to urge the Governor of Imo State, His Excellency, Dist. Sen. Hope Uzodimma to make it possible for the State Government to use the Public Private Partnership (PPP) business module to attract and bring in inventors that will revive the moribund industries and establish new ones in Imo State so as to close up the infrastructural gap in the State. This motion was sponsored by Rt. Hon. Amara Chyna Iwuanyanwu, Deputy Speaker and seven (7) other co-sponsors. It was passed on the 30th of May, 2024.
“This tenth House also passed some people oriented bills into law for the benefit of our beloved Imolites. Some of such bills include: HAB.3: A Bill for a Law to provide for the domestication of the Harrmonized Retirement Age of Teachers in Nigeria, Act 2022 in Imo State and for other related matters. This was one of the Executive Bills passed by the tenth House and was very well received by Imolites.
“Another bill passed into Law by this House was the HAB.12: A Bill for a Law to make Provision for and Improve Electricity, its Generation, Transmission and Distribution within and for the Residents of Imo State; to Establish an Electricity Market for Imo State; to establish a Regulatory Framework for Imo State Electricity Market: for Reliable and Sustainable Electricity Supply within Imo State, for Enforcement of Consumer Rights and Obligations and for connected purposes.
“This Bills which has been assented to by the Governor will revolutionize Power generation, distribution and transmission in Imo State and the 10th House will be part of this history.
“It is pertinent therefore to note that the tenth House has performed quite above average in its oversight duties, and assures Imolites of doing more,’Olemgbe assured.
He continued, “We must point out that, one of the secrets behind the success and exploits of the 10th House is that His Excellency, Dist Sen Hope Uzodimma, the Governor of Imo State, gave us a very conducive working environment; the best House of Assembly Complex in the Federation, completely digitalized.
“Gone are the years when members and staff of the House of Assembly use to work under leaking roofs and hot environment, and with obsolete equipment. We are very comfortable and so we have no reason not to deliver.
“We say thank you Sir, Your Excellency for your support and motivation,’Olemgbe stated’.
He further commended his colleagues, Clerk of the House, Barr. Mrs. Chinelo Emeghara and other staff of the Assembly for their doggedness towards the discharge of their duties.
He also commended Imolites for their support to them and assured them of better days ahead.
Giving the vote of thanks was the Deputy Speaker of the House, Rt. Hon. Amarachi Iwuanyanwu who appreciated everyone that was present in the House for making out time to join them in the celebration.
Iwuanyanwu specially thanked the Governor for a one year of fruitful partnership with the House, averring, “You, Your Excellency, the Governor of Imo State has shown in all your dealings with us that you are a true parliamentarian.
“We are most grateful to you for how you have not only given us a free hand to perform our oversight function, but has rendered every support needed; you have packaged two world class trainings, and seminars for us, the second which we are about to embark on.
“You have always paid attention to our motions and attended to them, and for this we are very grateful.
“You have reeled out projects for the state, and we want to assure you that whatever you need from us to fulfill that dream of a great Imo, we will partner with you to make sure you succeed, ‘Iwuanyanwu state.
