BEHIND THE PUSH FOR POLICE REFORMS! Silent Heroes Initiative Reveals Why IGP Disu’s Leadership Is Drawing Praise

By Our Correspondent

LAGOS — As calls for professionalism, accountability and public trust continue to shape discussions around policing in Nigeria, the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative (SHA) has applauded the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Olatunji Rilwan Disu, for his leadership approach and commitment to strengthening the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

The founder of the initiative, Comrade Odita Sunday, described the IGP’s leadership as a reflection of the vision, discipline and commitment required to build a modern, accountable and people-oriented police institution capable of responding effectively to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

According to Odita, effective policing goes beyond fighting crime, stressing that institutional reforms, respect for the rule of law, public accountability and meaningful engagement with communities are equally essential to building a credible security system.

He noted that the office of the Inspector-General of Police carries enormous responsibility and requires a leader with a clear vision, the ability to inspire personnel and the determination to ensure that officers discharge their constitutional duties with professionalism and integrity.

“Leadership in the security sector goes beyond occupying an office or issuing directives. It is about setting standards, inspiring personnel, strengthening institutions and building public trust through professional conduct and measurable results,” Odita said.

The SHA founder emphasised that public confidence remains a critical factor in effective policing, noting that sustained cooperation between law enforcement agencies and local communities is essential to preventing crime and enhancing national security.

He further highlighted the importance of intelligence-led operations, operational efficiency, respect for human rights and strategic partnerships with relevant stakeholders in addressing contemporary security challenges.

Odita also called attention to the welfare of police personnel, advocating continuous professional training, improved operational capacity and stronger institutional support.

He maintained that officers who serve under difficult and often hazardous conditions deserve recognition, encouragement and leadership that promotes integrity, excellence and dedication to duty.

“The men and women who serve in the security sector make enormous sacrifices, often away from the public spotlight. Recognising their service and encouraging exemplary leadership are important steps towards building stronger and more responsive institutions,” he added.

Why Silent Heroes Is Championing Excellence

Explaining the mission of the Silent Heroes Awards Initiative, Odita said the organisation is committed to identifying and celebrating individuals whose leadership, service and contributions have made significant impacts in security, governance, community development and national growth.

He explained that recognising excellence is an effective way to promote responsible leadership, encourage professionalism and inspire greater dedication to public service.

According to him, recognition should not be determined solely by titles or positions but by character, integrity, institutional impact and a genuine commitment to humanity.

The SHA founder also urged Nigerians to support initiatives aimed at strengthening the country’s security architecture, describing security as a collective responsibility that requires cooperation among government institutions, communities, civil society organisations and the private sector.

The Message Behind the Commendation

Expressing optimism about the future of policing in Nigeria, Odita said sustained reforms, visionary leadership and stronger partnerships between the police and citizens could contribute significantly to improving public safety and restoring confidence in law enforcement.

He reaffirmed SHA’s commitment to promoting integrity, excellence and selfless service while encouraging public office holders to remain focused on delivering quality service to Nigerians.

He stressed that the true measure of leadership in the security sector lies not merely in the authority attached to an office but in the ability to improve lives, strengthen institutions and earn the trust of the people.
