Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has reignited political controversy ahead of the 2027 presidential election after declaring that he would vote for Peter Obi only if the former Anambra State governor were contesting for the position of “social media president.”
Wike made the remark on Saturday during a stakeholders’ town hall meeting in Bonny Local Government Area of Rivers State, where he questioned Obi’s ability to win the presidential election and effectively govern Nigeria.
According to the minister, Obi enjoys considerable popularity on social media but lacks the political capacity to secure victory at the polls.
“Truly speaking, I give Obi president of social media. If you were voting for the president of social media, I would vote for him,” Wike declared.
The FCT minister went further to describe Obi as a stingy politician, arguing that Nigeria’s economy could not be entrusted to him.
Wike’s latest comments add to the growing political exchanges surrounding the 2027 presidential race, with opposition figures and supporters of President Bola Tinubu positioning themselves ahead of the highly anticipated election.
DAILY POST reports that Wike, who is leading the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential campaign in Abuja and Rivers State, has repeatedly criticised Obi and other opposition candidates.
The minister has also expressed confidence that President Tinubu will secure re-election, dismissing the chances of opposition contenders.
With political tension gradually building ahead of the 2027 election, Wike’s latest remarks are likely to fuel further debate over Obi’s popularity, electoral prospects and suitability for the presidency.
