Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has officially resigned from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), triggering fresh political ripples ahead of the 2027 elections.
His exit comes just days after the emergence of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar as the party’s presidential candidate, a development Lawal strongly condemned.
In a scathing statement, Lawal alleged that the ADC presidential primary was “massively rigged” in favour of Atiku, describing the process as a “pre-written script” designed to install the former vice president as the flag bearer.
He said he could not remain in a party where, according to him, internal democracy had been compromised, insisting that staying would make him part of what he called a “rigging machinery” ahead of 2027.
Lawal further made a striking political comparison, arguing that President Bola Tinubu would be a “better Nigerian president” than Atiku, a comment that has already sparked reactions across political circles.
He also accused the party leadership of ignoring internal irregularities, claiming that dissenting voices during the primaries were sidelined and replaced through manipulated processes.
According to him, his decision to quit the ADC was based on conscience and a refusal to be part of what he described as a flawed political structure heading into the next general election.
