The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has launched a blistering attack on opposition parties, describing members of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as “known liars” over their claims of repositioning Nigeria’s democracy.
Speaking on Monday during his monthly media briefing in Abuja, Wike dismissed the parties’ reform narratives, accusing them of misleading Nigerians with promises of political renewal and democratic transformation.
He argued that both parties—despite branding themselves as new and credible alternatives—have been unable to conduct credible internal primaries without disputes and allegations of irregularities.
According to him, the same electoral flaws they accuse ruling parties of also exist within their own structures, exposing what he called deep contradictions in their credibility.
Wike specifically pointed to recent internal crises during the ADC presidential primary, where some aspirants openly rejected the process and described it as flawed.
He questioned the moral standing of parties that claim to be “saviours of Nigerian democracy” while struggling with internal disagreements.
“They said they are the saviour that will come. What has happened now?” Wike said.
“NDC said we are the new face of democracy… ADC said they are unpolluted… What has happened?”
He further added that Nigerians have now seen through their claims, insisting that opposition parties cannot present themselves as messiahs while replicating the same problems they criticize.
Wike concluded that, based on recent events, older political parties—despite their flaws—remain more experienced in managing Nigeria’s political realities than the emerging opposition movements.
