GOMEP-NG Applauds Polaris Bank’s AI Training for 6,200 Journalists, Seeks Wider Support for Media Development

The Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has commended Polaris Bank for its landmark initiative of training more than 6,200 journalists across Nigeria on Artificial Intelligence (AI) and ethical journalism, describing the programme as a major boost to media professionalism and digital transformation in the country.
The Guild also urged the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Information and National Orientation, financial institutions, corporate organisations, development partners and other stakeholders to replicate similar interventions by investing in continuous capacity development for media practitioners.
In a joint statement signed by its National President, Comrade Akpovoke Otiti, and National Secretary, Comrade Clinton Uba, GOMEP-NG said Polaris Bank’s commitment to enhancing journalists’ understanding of emerging technologies and ethical reporting standards deserves widespread commendation.
The Guild noted that while the organisers and facilitators of the training are not members of GOMEP-NG, the association believes that impactful contributions to journalism and media development should be recognised regardless of affiliations.
“Recognising excellence and supporting initiatives that strengthen journalism is part of our responsibility as a professional body. Polaris Bank has demonstrated exemplary corporate citizenship by empowering thousands of journalists with the skills and knowledge needed to harness the opportunities and address the challenges associated with Artificial Intelligence,” the statement said.
According to GOMEP-NG, the rapid advancement of AI is transforming news gathering, content creation and information dissemination across the globe, making it imperative for journalists to acquire new competencies that will enable them to maintain ethical standards, counter misinformation and disinformation, and sustain public trust in the media.
The Guild stressed that ongoing professional development has become essential for journalists seeking to remain relevant and effective in an increasingly technology-driven media environment.
It therefore called on the Federal Government, the Ministry of Information and National Orientation, commercial banks, private sector operators, donor agencies and development partners to establish and support similar training programmes aimed at strengthening the capacity of journalists nationwide.
GOMEP-NG further stated that sustained investment in media education and digital skills development would not only enhance the quality and credibility of journalism but also contribute significantly to democratic governance, transparency, accountability and national development.
The Guild reaffirmed its commitment to promoting ethical journalism, professional excellence and innovation within Nigeria’s online media space, while encouraging strategic partnerships that will equip journalists with the tools needed to thrive in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
