After Weeks in Captivity, Doctors Make Alarming Discovery in Rescued Oyo Pupil

A startling medical discovery has emerged in the aftermath of the rescue of abducted pupils in Oyo State, as doctors revealed that one of the children was found to have a previously undetected heart defect during post-captivity examinations.

The management of LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, disclosed that 31 of the 39 rescued pupils have now been discharged and reunited with their families after being certified medically fit.

The hospital’s Chief Medical Director, Prof. Olawale Olakulehin, said all the children were admitted immediately after their rescue for thorough medical screening and treatment.

However, while most of the pupils have recovered sufficiently to return home, eight remain under close medical observation.

In a revelation that surprised both doctors and the child’s family, routine examinations uncovered a congenital heart defect—a hole in the heart—in one of the rescued pupils.

According to Olakulehin, the condition had gone unnoticed before the child was brought to the hospital.

> “One of the children was found to have a congenital heart defect—a hole in the heart—during our comprehensive medical evaluation,” he said.



He assured the public that the pupil is stable and responding positively to treatment, adding that the Oyo State Government would be informed to facilitate further medical care.

The CMD described the discharge of the 31 pupils as a major step in the recovery process but stressed that attention remains focused on the eight children still receiving specialised treatment.

Beyond physical care, he noted that the hospital is also providing psychological support to help the pupils overcome the trauma they endured during weeks in captivity.

The hospital reaffirmed its commitment to monitoring the children’s physical and mental well-being until they make a full recovery.

The 39 pupils were among those abducted from schools in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State before being rescued after spending several weeks in captivity.
