Peter Obi Breaks Silence On EFCC Move Against Mama Pee, Randy Peter

The Presidential Candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has challenged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over its investigation of social media personalities Mama Pee and Randy Peter, urging the agency to concentrate on major corruption cases instead.

Reacting to the invitation of the two online commentators, Obi, through the Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), argued that the anti-graft agency should focus more on tackling large-scale financial crimes and corruption allegations that have far-reaching effects on the nation.

In a statement issued on Thursday and signed by POMR spokesperson Idris Zekeri, the group described the EFCC as a vital institution in Nigeria’s anti-corruption fight but stressed that its resources should be directed toward cases involving alleged embezzlement, diversion of public funds, and other serious economic crimes.

POMR noted that corruption continues to hinder economic development, weaken infrastructure growth, and erode public trust in governance.

The group also expressed concern over what it described as a growing pattern of social media critics, political activists, and online commentators being summoned, questioned, or detained over issues it considered relatively minor or open to debate.

While acknowledging that all citizens are subject to the law, POMR questioned whether dedicating significant investigative resources to online disputes aligns with the EFCC’s core mandate.

According to the statement, an excessive focus on social media-related cases could create the perception that the agency is being used to suppress dissent rather than combat corruption, potentially undermining public confidence in its operations.

POMR therefore called on the EFCC leadership to channel its efforts toward high-profile financial crimes, public sector corruption, and other pressing economic challenges facing the country, insisting that the commission’s primary responsibility should remain the fight against corruption.
