Dr. Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, popularly known as Ada Owere, has outlined her healthcare and social protection agenda for Owerri Federal Constituency, promising to champion accessible, affordable and quality healthcare for residents if elected to the House of Representatives.
Under Pillar 5 of her eight-point agenda, tagged “Healthcare and Social Protection,” the Labour Party candidate emphasised that access to quality healthcare should be a fundamental right rather than a privilege reserved for those who can afford it.
Addressing the healthcare needs of residents across Owerri Municipal, Owerri North and Owerri West, Ada Owere stressed the importance of strengthening healthcare facilities, improving maternal and child health services, expanding cancer screening and providing support for vulnerable members of society.
Better Healthcare Facilities and Essential Medicines
As part of her proposed reforms, Ada Owere said she would advocate for better-equipped primary healthcare centres, adequate supplies of essential medicines, more trained healthcare workers and improved access to medical services.
According to her, stronger primary healthcare services are essential to ensuring that families receive timely medical attention without unnecessary financial hardship.
What She Plans for Mothers and Children
The proposed agenda also prioritises maternal and child healthcare, with an emphasis on accessible antenatal services, safe delivery, immunisation and proper nutrition.
The initiative seeks to promote healthier outcomes for mothers and children while strengthening the support available to families across the constituency.
Cancer Screening Takes Centre Stage
One of the key highlights of Pillar 5 is Ada Owere’s commitment to cancer prevention and early detection.
Drawing on her longstanding breast cancer advocacy, she stressed the importance of making cancer awareness more practical through accessible screening and timely diagnosis.
She pledged to advocate for increased access to breast, cervical and prostate cancer screening, including government support for free screening services.
She also encouraged women and men to understand their cancer risks, seek appropriate screening and obtain medical attention promptly when necessary.
Vulnerable Residents Not Left Behind
Beyond healthcare delivery, Ada Owere said her agenda would address the needs of elderly people, persons with disabilities, vulnerable households and families experiencing financial hardship.
She advocated practical social protection measures designed to preserve dignity, reduce hardship and improve the well-being of disadvantaged members of the community.
How She Plans to Drive the Agenda
As a prospective federal lawmaker, Ada Owere said she would push for increased investment in healthcare, effective oversight of public health expenditure and stronger support for vulnerable residents.
She also pledged to work with relevant government agencies, healthcare providers and community organisations to advance practical solutions to the constituency’s healthcare challenges.
Emphasising the need for a people-centred approach to development, she maintained that families should be able to access medical care without being pushed further into poverty.
Her vision, she explained, is to build a constituency where mothers and children receive proper care, cancer screening is more accessible and vulnerable residents are not forgotten.
“Healthy People. Stronger Communities. A Better Owerri!”
With Pillar 5 of her eight-point agenda, Ada Owere is placing healthcare access, cancer prevention and social protection at the centre of her proposed representation for Owerri Federal Constituency.
Whether these proposals translate into tangible improvements will depend on effective advocacy, collaboration with relevant institutions and sustained commitment to implementation.
