Suspected bandits have reportedly killed several police officers after attacking a vehicle conveying them from Sokoto State to Zamfara State for a special duty assignment.

The officers were reportedly ambushed on Monday while travelling to Zamfara, with disturbing details and images from the incident sparking fresh concerns over the worsening security situation in Nigeria’s North-West.

Although the exact number of officers killed remains unknown, videos obtained after the attack showed the lifeless bodies of some personnel inside a bus, with their hands and legs apparently tied with ropes.

Other images showed personal belongings scattered around the scene, while visible bloodstains were seen inside the vehicle conveying the officers.

As of the time of filing this report, it was unclear whether any of the officers survived the attack or the circumstances surrounding the reported killings.

The incident comes amid persistent insecurity across the North-West, where armed groups have continued to attack communities, ambush travellers and abduct residents for ransom.

Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Katsina and Kaduna states have remained among the areas affected by recurring bandit attacks.

The Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Yazid Abubakar, disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday, October 31, 2026.

According to the statement, the ongoing clearance operation commenced on October 28 after armed bandits attempted to attack the community.

The police said security operatives, working alongside local civil security outfits, engaged the attackers in a fierce gun battle and prevented them from gaining access to the town.

The Command noted that the discovery of over 30 suspected bandit bodies suggested that the attackers might have suffered significant casualties.

However, it cautioned that the actual number of casualties had yet to be established, explaining that armed groups often evacuate their dead and injured from battle locations.

The police added that the successful defence of the community prevented possible loss of lives, destruction of property and further displacement of residents.
