Ada Owere : From A Lifetime Of Service To A New Political Chapter In Owerri

For more than five decades, Chief Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu (Ada Owere)has moved through different spheres of public life — education, professional service, healthcare advocacy, women’s empowerment, community development and politics.

At every stage, one theme has remained constant: service to humanity.

Today, that long journey is once again drawing political attention in Owerri Federal Constituency, where Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu has already indicated her interest in seeking the House of Representatives seat on the platform of the Labour Party.

For many people who have followed her journey, the development represents more than another political ambition. It represents a return to the arena where she believes public policy can be translated into practical development for the people.

A WOMAN WHO HAS CONSISTENTLY CHALLENGED THE STATUS QUO
Dr Betty’s story is not that of someone who suddenly discovered politics. Her engagement with public issues dates back several decades. From her early professional career in the Federal Civil Service to her international exposure, humanitarian activities and political engagements, she has consistently demonstrated an interest in issues affecting ordinary people.

Her experience with breast cancer in 1997 became a defining turning point. Rather than retreating from public life, she transformed a personal health challenge into a national advocacy platform. Through the Breast Cancer Association of Nigeria, BRECAN, she became a prominent voice for breast-cancer awareness and advocacy.

The journey subsequently earned her recognition from institutions and organisations in Nigeria and abroad. But healthcare advocacy was only one part of the story.

FROM WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT TO COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
As First Lady of Ondo State, Betty expanded her interventions into areas including education, technology, women’s economic empowerment, healthcare, social protection and protection against gender-based violence.

Through the BEMORE initiative, young girls were exposed to ICT, solar technology and practical skills.

Through Forum for Wives of Ondo State Officials, FOWOSO, women were encouraged to develop economic independence and participate more actively in public affairs.

Other initiatives focused on expectant mothers, widows, birth registration and youth development.

The underlying philosophy was clear: empowerment should give people the tools to improve their own lives. That philosophy has also influenced her interventions in Imo State.

EMEABIAM: THE COMMUNITY THAT REFUSED TO LEAVE HER HEART
Despite marriage to an Owo man of Ondo state, Dr Betty has maintained a strong connection with Emeabiam her home town in Owerri West, which she fondly calls ” my small London”. Her concerns about the community’s infrastructure, education, healthcare and economic potential have repeatedly featured in her public activities. She has advocated for road infrastructure and other development interventions while also personally supporting community projects.

Her current construction of a community health centre and a police station in Emeabiam is another example of her continued involvement in grassroots development.

For Dr.Betty, the development of a community should not depend solely on government announcements. She has demonstrated through her activities that individuals can also mobilise resources, influence institutions and create opportunities.

WHY THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES?
Her decision to seek elective office in Owerri Federal Constituency therefore comes against the background of a long history of public engagement.

The National Assembly provides a platform through which constituency concerns can be taken directly into national conversations on legislation, budgets, infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment and economic development.

For a constituency with a large population and diverse development needs, representation involves more than attending legislative sessions. It involves understanding the people. It involves identifying their priorities. It involves attracting development. And it involves maintaining a direct connection between the constituency and the institutions of government.

These are areas Dr Betty’s supporters say she has spent decades working around.

A POLITICAL JOURNEY OF PERSISTENCE
Dr Betty’s political journey has also included setbacks. She contested for the House of Representatives in 2007. She subsequently became involved in APGA activities in Imo State and later sought the APC ticket for Imo East Senatorial District ahead of the 2023 elections. The different stages of that journey have provided her with direct experience of Nigeria’s political terrain.

Now, her interest in the Owerri Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat under the Labour Party introduces another chapter. This time, the political conversation is taking place against the backdrop of a career that has already traversed professional service, humanitarian advocacy, government and electoral politics.

EXPERIENCE MEETS A NEW GENERATION
One of the most significant aspects of Dr. Betty’s current political ambition is the possibility of bringing decades of experience into direct legislative representation. Her supporters point to her academic background, professional career, international exposure, humanitarian work and experience working within government.

They also point to her grassroots connection with Owerri and her continued involvement in community development. For them, the political aspiration is not an isolated event. It is the continuation of a journey. A journey that began with education. Moved through professional service. Expanded into humanitarian advocacy. Entered the political arena. And now appears to be heading toward another electoral contest.

THE OWERRI QUESTION
As political activities gradually intensify, attention will naturally turn toward the issues that matter most to residents of Owerri Federal Constituency. Which are -Infrastructure, Healthcare, Education, Employment, Youth development, Women’s economic empowerment, Agriculture, Small businesses, And effective representation.

These are issues that will inevitably shape the political conversation.

For Dr Betty Anyanwu-Akeredolu, her record provides a substantial body of experience from which to explain what she hopes to accomplish. Her political ambition is already known. Her interest in the Labour Party platform for the Owerri Federal Constituency House of Representatives seat is already a subject of public conversation.

The next stage will be about taking that ambition directly to the people and allowing the electorate to examine her record, her ideas and her vision for the constituency.

After decades of service across different fronts, Ada Owere is once again stepping toward the political arena. This time, the destination is Owerri Federal Constituency — and the conversation has already begun.
