The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has again issued fresh ultimatum to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, ex-Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal, and other key figures.
They have been directed by the party to regularise their membership or risk losing recognition in the party.
ADC Chairman in Adamawa State, Shehu Yohanna, who spoke in Yola, said the party had commenced a nationwide membership registration exercise.
He pointed out that only individuals who have valid membership cards from their wards would be regarded as authentic members.
“Atiku Abubakar should go to his ward in Jada Local Government to register, and Babachir should do the same in his Hong ward. That is the only way they can be treated as legitimate members,” Yohanna told The Punch.
He warned that no individual could legitimately participate in decision-making or hold leadership positions at the national level without being a constitutionally recognised member.
“You cannot be taking decisions for a party you are not constitutionally a member of. All of you should register for the greatness of our party. It is illegal for someone to hold a leadership position in the party without being a registered member. That makes a caricature of the party,” he added.
The ultimatum stems from a National Caucus resolution, reaffirmed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, which requires all coalition members to resign from their current political platforms and fully register with the ADC.
Atiku was expected to pick up his ADC membership card in Jada last August, but the exercise was suspended abruptly without explanation.
