Court Again Halts PDP National Convention

The Federal High Court in Abuja has once again restrained the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned national convention.

Justice Peter Lifu issued the fresh order on Tuesday following an application filed by former Jigawa State Governor, Alhaji Sule Lamido.

In his ruling, Justice Lifu directed that the convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, be put on hold pending the determination of the substantive suit before the court.

The judge also ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) not to supervise or recognise any outcome from the planned convention until the case is concluded.

Justice Lifu held that Lamido’s application had merit and was granted in the interest of justice, noting that proceeding with the convention could infringe on the former governor’s rights as a member of the party.

Lamido had approached the court, arguing that the PDP violated its own constitution by fixing the convention without due process and adequate notice to members. He further claimed that the action would deny him a fair opportunity to contest for the position of national chairman.

It would be recalled that Justice James Omotosho had earlier, on October 31, issued a similar interim order restraining the PDP from holding the same convention.

The latest ruling deepens the party’s leadership crisis, which has continued to stall its reorganisation efforts ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The matter has been adjourned for the hearing of the substantive suit later today.
