The Imo State House of Assembly has commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for his ‘remarkable strides’ in the education sector, particularly the establishment of the newly approved Imo State University of Science, Innovation and Technology, Omuma.
They therefore conferred on him the title of “Most Education-Friendly Governor in Nigeria.”
The commendation followed a motion sponsored by the Chief Whip of the House, Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri, which was seconded by the Member representing Nkwerre State Constituency, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu, and co-sponsored by 11 other legislators, on Thursday during the House plenary.
Presenting the motion, Nwaneri emphasized that education remains the best legacy any government can bequeath to future generations.
He praised Governor Uzodimma, saying that he is determined to reposition the education sector of the state through massive investments in infrastructure, provision of facilities, and the establishment of new tertiary institutions across the state.
According to him, “The Governor’s selfless efforts have once again yielded results with the recent approval of the Imo State University of Science, Innovation and Technology, Omuma by the National Universities Commission (NUC).”
“Before he came into power, our medical student had not graduated for many years, but he took care of the challenge and we started having graduates; medical doctors that graduate from our university. He has uplifted and refurbished the Imo State University Teaching Hospital at Orlu.
“He has made Alvan Ikoku College of Education to become a Federal University, brought about the Umuagwo University of Agriculture, trained thousands of Imo people of digital skills through the Skill Up Imo Programme, among others.”
Nwaneri noted that the new university, dedicated to science, innovation, and technology, will open more opportunities for Imo youths seeking higher education, while also serving as a centre for research, training, and global development.
He further described the institution as a strategic addition that will push Imo State to the forefront of scientific and technological advancement in Nigeria and beyond.
Supporting the motion, was the Majority of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, members representing – Oru West, Rt. Hon. Dominion Ezerioha, Hon. James Esile (Onuimo), Hon. Chisom Ojukwu (Nkwerre)
They stated that Governor Uzodimma deserves the honour, seeing the number of universities he has established which according to them, reflects his commitment to producing globally competitive graduates.
“The Governor does not joke with anything that concerns learning, knowing its role as the bedrock of societal growth. The establishment of the university, and others, shows that he truly means well for the people, and so deserves encomiums,’they stated.
As there was no one against the motion, the Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chyna Iwuanyanwu who Presided over the House put the motion to vote, and the Ayes had it.
