Presidential Statement: 1967-1970 Event In Eastern Nigeria Was A Genocide, Not A War – Ohanaeze Youth

The statement of Sen. Ned Nwoko about the self-denial of some Igbos in the present Delta state is historical facts known by every conscious, self awakened Igbo person.

“We are all Igbos. Let me tell you what I know. I am a witness myself. During the wār many people were kìĺled in Asaba (Asaba massacre) and in various communities. We were told, including myself, that if we see any Nigerian soldier, we should tell them that we are from the Bini Kingdom, I was told, along with my cousins. The Nigerian soldiers were going from village to village kilĺïng us. We were told that if we were to survive, we must deny being Igbo. That is what I can tell you as a witness.”- Senator Ned Nwoko.

The experience of the Igbos, especially Anioma people during the 1967-1970 period indicates that the conflict was not a war, but a systematic genocide committed against Ndigbo by the Nigerian federal government, with the alleged support of foreign powers, including Britain, the United States, Germany, Russia, and Egypt.

How can the actions of Nigeria troops in Anioma land be described as anything other than a deliberate and systematic genocide, given the reported incidents of slaughter, killing, rape, and forced displacement of innocent civilians, including mothers and teenagers, which bears disturbing similarities to the atrocities committed during the German Nazi Holocaust?

The 1967-1970 event in the Eastern region of Nigeria has been characterized as Holocaust, it’s a deliberate act of genocide by the federal government aimed at the Igbo population, who put up resistance for 3 years.

The new generation of Igbo extraction have consistently upheld our position with robust empirical evidence that the Federal Government violated every tenet of conventional warfare during the 1967-1970 event.

At the conclusion of the genocide, Gen. Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu’s second in command Gen. Philip Effiong declared that “if the remaining Igbos being reintegrated into Nigeria are treated unjustly and marginalized, the issue of Biafran will resurface”

Immediately after 1967-1970 Genocide where 4.3 million Igbos was slaughtered the victimization and marginalization of Ndigbo took place with £20 refund irrespective of millions of Pounds each individual Igbo person had in the Bank. The 3R’s policy that was launched by Gen. Yakubu Gowon none was implemented in the Eastern Region. Rather the Rehabilitation, Reconciliation and Reconstruction took place in Northern Nigeria and Southwest Nigeria.

Today the call for a referendum and self-determination led by Nnamdi Kanu the leader of Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB) is a prophetic fulfilment of General Philip Effiong statement in 1970.

To the new generation of Igbo extraction the struggle for self-preservation and self-determination of Ndigbo is a divinely ignited spirit that cannot be extinguished by any earthly power.

The federal government led by President Bola Tinubu should be aware that the illegal arrest, incarceration, and attempted illegal trial of Nnamdi Kanu are highly provocative to the Igbo people, especially over 50 million Igbo Youths around the globe.

It is imperative that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu discontinues tribal victimization and discrimination against the Igbo people and unconditionally releases Nnamdi Kanu to prevent Nigeria from relapsing into the 1967 crisis.
