Impeachment Threat Against Fubara Linked to 2026 Budget Dispute – APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Group has alleged that the impeachment threats against Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, are politically motivated and stem from his refusal to approve questionable projects in the state’s 2026 budget.
The group made the allegation on Friday in Port Harcourt, dismissing claims by the Rivers State House of Assembly that the governor breached the peace agreement brokered by President Bola Tinubu to resolve the ongoing political crisis in the state.
Speaking to journalists, the APC South-South coordinator, Freedom Amadi, said the impeachment move was a calculated response to Fubara’s resistance to pressure to inflate the budget with what he described as fictitious projects.
According to Amadi, the governor acted in the public interest by insisting on fiscal responsibility, contrary to claims that he undermined the presidential peace accord.
“What we are seeing is not a constitutional process but a deliberate attempt to punish a governor who refused to compromise public funds,” Amadi said.
He explained that President Tinubu’s intervention was meant to restore stability and ensure smooth governance, not to subject the governor to political intimidation or legislative coercion.
The group also accused lawmakers driving the impeachment process of acting under the influence of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, a former governor of the state.
Amadi expressed concern over Wike’s silence on the matter, noting that his position in an APC-led federal government made the situation more troubling.
“When lawmakers claim that not even the President can restrain them, it amounts to institutional insubordination and a threat to democratic order,” he stated.
The APC South-South warned that the use of impeachment to settle political disputes would weaken democratic institutions and undermine public trust in governance.
Describing impeachment as a serious constitutional tool rather than a political weapon, the group urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to halt all impeachment actions and called on the National Assembly to intervene.
“Rivers State belongs to its people, not to political factions. Its budget must not be turned into a tool for personal or political vendetta,” the group said.
