President Bola Tinubu has approved the free registration and formalization of 250,000 Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) across Nigeria in a move aimed at boosting small businesses and expanding their access to financial and regulatory opportunities.
The approval was announced on Saturday during the 8th National MSME Awards 2026 held at the State House in Abuja.
According to the Presidency, the initiative is designed to eliminate the financial barriers that often prevent nano, micro and small-scale businesses from becoming formally registered entities, thereby integrating them into Nigeria’s formal banking and regulatory system.
Under the programme, selected beneficiaries will receive full business name registration through the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) at no cost, with the Federal Government covering the statutory registration fees.
Beyond the registration waiver, the intervention package also includes technical training and mentorship support aimed at improving the sustainability and long-term success of participating businesses.
Interested entrepreneurs are expected to apply through the official SMEDAN portal using the hashtag #SMEDANGov to complete the required documentation and secure their onboarding slots.
The Presidency explained that the programme is being implemented through a strategic partnership between the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).
Officials involved in the initiative described the registration waiver as a significant financial relief package designed to reduce the high failure rate among small businesses and encourage greater participation in the formal economy.
