The National Publicity Secretary of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Osa Director, has disclosed that the party has put strict measures in place to stop political aspirants from taking advantage of the popularity of Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso to secure power ahead of the 2027 elections.
Speaking on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, the NDC spokesman said the party had learnt from the experiences of the 2023 general elections and would now carry out more detailed screening of aspirants.
According to him, many individuals, particularly those based abroad with little or no political background, had rushed to obtain NDC forms because they viewed the party as a strong alternative platform.
“We learnt from what happened in the Labour Party in the past. During our screening process, we paid special attention to the influx of people, especially from the diaspora, who suddenly became interested in politics under the NDC platform,” he said.
He added that some of the aspirants were likely motivated by the popularity enjoyed by Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso during the 2023 elections.
“As you mentioned, some of them probably wanted to ride on the Obi-Kwankwaso wave because they see the NDC as a vibrant alternative to the current situation in the country. We are aware of that,” he stated.
Director explained that aspirants were thoroughly questioned about their political vision, credentials, and grassroots presence during the screening exercise.
“If you are not on the ground, who is going to vote for you?” he queried.
Recall that Peter Obi contested the 2023 presidential election under the Labour Party, while Rabiu Kwankwaso flew the flag of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).
In the lead-up to the election, several relatively unknown politicians joined both parties and won elective positions, only to later defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
However, the NDC spokesman insisted that his party would not allow a repeat of such incidents.
“The NDC has made it clear to all aspirants that it will not be business as usual. We will thoroughly verify your pedigree and commitment to the party’s principles and values before handing over any ticket,” he added.
He stressed that only aspirants with credible political records and loyalty to the party would be considered to fly the NDC flag in future elections.
