ABUJA — A fresh political storm may be brewing ahead of the 2027 general elections as the Guild of Online Media Editors and Publishers of Nigeria (GOMEP-NG) has raised concerns over the emerging coalition reportedly linked to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
The media organisation warned that the emergence of rival political blocs could narrow President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s political options and make efforts to achieve broader political consensus more difficult ahead of the 2027 elections.
In a statement, GOMEP-NG expressed concern over what it described as the declining democratic values and political influence of the former Rivers State governor, urging Wike to exercise restraint in his public statements.
The organisation said Wike should redirect his political energy towards constructive engagement, rather than making comments capable of escalating tensions within the political space.
GOMEP-NG also accused the FCT minister of what it described as “manhunting” of political stakeholders across rival parties, urging him to desist from attempts to woo or undermine prominent figures within other political platforms.
According to the group, Nigeria’s democracy would be better served by political tolerance, dialogue and respect for the independence of political parties.
It stressed that political disagreements should not be allowed to weaken democratic institutions or generate unnecessary tension as the country moves closer to the 2027 elections.
GOMEP-NG Backs INEC After Osun, Ekiti Polls
Meanwhile, GOMEP-NG has expressed confidence in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the recent governorship elections in Osun and Ekiti states.
The organisation described the conduct of the polls as commendable, particularly noting the absence of post-election court cases arising from the two elections.
GOMEP-NG said the development represents a positive sign for Nigeria’s electoral process and urged INEC to sustain the momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group called on the electoral commission to build on the lessons from the Osun and Ekiti elections while strengthening transparency, professionalism and public confidence in the electoral system.
It maintained that a credible and trusted electoral commission remains essential to ensuring that Nigerians’ votes count and that election outcomes genuinely reflect the will of the electorate.
