In line with the motion moved by Hon. James Esile, the member representing Onuimo State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, over the devastating erosion menace at Alaocha community in Eziama Okwe of the Local Government Area, the State House of Assembly members have beckoned on Governor Hope Uzodimma to intervene in the issue.
They called on him to direct the Ministry of Works and the Ministry of Environment to visit the menace and seek ways to remedy the situation, and provide them with the necessary logistics support to carry out a remedial work at the moment, while soliciting for permanent solution to end the challenge.
The motion which was presented by the Onuimo legislator, Esile, at the floor of the House on Tuesday was cosponsored by three other lawmakers; Hon. Bernard Ozoemenam (Ehime Mbano), Hon. Ikenna Ihezuo ( Orlu), Hon. Sam Osuji ( Isiala Mbano).
Presenting the motion, Hon. James Esile popularly known as Fresh Air averred, “the people of Alaocha Community in Onuimo Local Government Area are mainly farmers, that make a living from their farm, agro produce, and use the link roads to export these produce to other Local Government Areas in and outside the State, but unfortunately, the Agriculture and other socio-economic activities have suffered a devastating and terrible set back, due to frightening erosion menace which has almost destroyed the major link road in the community.
“The link road leads to Umucheke Okwe and Umuchiri Eziama Okwe which are three different political wards in Onuimo LGA. It also leads to Umuduru – Egbeahuru which is the fourth political ward in the LGA. Again, it leads to Umuago and Umuobom communities in ldeato North LGA, and also to Anambra State as well.
“Through this same road, many commercial vehicles transport passengers going to Uga, Nnewi, Onitsha towns in Anambra State.
“The road now has become a very big death trap, and people living around that area are suffering and are helpless, as the devastating erosion has taken and eat more than half of the road leaving only a very small and narrow lane for road users.
“The people are therefore afraid that if nothing is urgently done to arrest the situation, the remaining narrow lane would be eaten up and cut off by the menace before the end of this rainy season.
“Also there is need to urgently address the situation to avoid loss of lives, and properties for especially the sake of road users; drivers who drive at night and are not aware of the very bad condition of the road.
Supporting the motion, the Chief Whip of the House, Rt. Hon. Chigozie Nwaneri; Nkwerre lawmaker, Hon. Chisom Ojukwu; Oguta legislator, Hon. Engr. Gilbert Chiedozie Nwosu; Mbaitoli representative, Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, all shared in the sufferings of the people, and beckoned on the governor to urgently intervene in the issue, saying that this is the best time to do so before the rainy season comes.
