For accessible rural road networks: Imo Assembly Okays Egu’s call for revival of IRROMA

In view of the motion moved by the member representing Ngor Okpala State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Obinna Egu, Ph.D, the lawmakers, have called on Governor Hope Uzodimma to reconstitute the Imo State Rural Roads Maintenance Agency (IRROMA) in other to ensure that no part of the rural areas remain dormant due to bad road.

The members made the call on Wednesday, when the motion which was presented at the floor of the House, by the Ngor Okpala legislation, Egu, was seconded by the Isiala Mbano lawmaker, Hon. Sam Osuji, and co-sponsored by nine other members.

Throwing more light on the motion, the legislator pointed out that most of the motions been raised at the floor of the House are mainly centered on dilapidated roads, caused by erosion menace, especially in the rural areas.

This, he said can be curtailed with the reconstituting of the Imo State Rural Roads Maintenance Agency (IRROMA) which he disclosed has already been made a Law in the State, and is saddled with the responsibility of making our rural roads accessible.

He continued, “you all will agree with me that His Excellency Distinguished Senator Hope Uzodimma has done marvellously well in road infrastructure and is still doing so in the state, but it is not absolutely possible for him on his own to fix all the roads in the state, which is why this agency; IRROMA needs to be reawakened in the state to assist him with the maintenance of the roads and also making them accessible at all times.

“Imo State Rural Roads Maintenance Agency (IRROMA) was launched on the 15th day of November, 2008, IRROMA with aim of opening up rural areas and linking all parts of the State, as plans to make Imo State a one city state.

“The IRROMA initiative focuses on transforming the State into a model with emphasis on industrialization and enterprise, provision of social infrastructure, respect for Rule of Law, talking environmental issues and resuscitating key institutions.

“The initiative suffered negligence and poor management by successive administrations, whence it became defunct or moribund negating it’s primary responsibility.

“When revived, the agency will add impetus to the state government’s rural roads revolution which the Governor since inception of his first term in office from 2020, has been working on in pursuance of his Shared Prosperity administration that is anchored on reconstruction, rehabilitation and Recovery, ‘ Egu stated’.

He reiterated that reviving of IRROMA will take care of the rural areas; the plights of their people calling on them on daily basis talking about how bad their roads are.

Egu maintained that it will reduce the cost of farm produce in the market, as farmers will be able to access the markets, especially the ones in Owerri Metropolis, at a subsidized transport fare charge.

The issue of bad road, he said is what has made most of our food items expensive as farmers pay through their noses to get their produce to the markets.

Clinton Amadi, lawmakers representingOru West; Rt. Hon Dominic Ezerioha, Mbaitoli; Hon. Innocent Ikpamezie, Owerri North; Hon. Kelechi, Isiala Mbano; Hon. Sam Osuji, Nkwerre; Hon. Chiom Ojukwu, among others.

They all reflected on how the reconstituting of the agency will aid easy the suffering of the rural dwellers, and boost the economy of the state.

As the Speaker put the motion to vote, the Ayes’ had it.
