The Imo State House of Assembly has adopted a motion urging Governor Hope Uzodinma to direct the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development and other relevant Government Agencies to embark on the use proper identifiable signage for street naming in Imo State in
This ensued during the House plenary when the motion was moved by the Minority Leader of the House and member representing Aboh Mbaise State Constituency, Hon. Ugochukwu Amuchie.
Speaking on the motion, Amuchie pointed out that many streets in Imo State are without proper identifiable signage for directions and some are also without recognizable names which makes it hard for especially visitors that come into the state to easily access their destinations.
He continued that the Town/Urban planning in Imo State constitutes the life wire and add to the aesthetic beauty of the State, adding that proper street naming not initiated and carried out would leave the State in total disarray.
Amuchie further opined,” Imo State Government having interest in the town planning, security and architectural design/street naming of its cities which includes but not limited to Owerri Capital City through its initiation of the process to give a shot in the arm of tacky street signage which would help in giving proper direction to our tourists, visitors and Imo Citizens.
“Seeing that plethora of the streets in Imo State are without proper identifiable signage for directions and some are without recognizable names, the Imo State Governor having shown a glowing desire to ensure street naming and proper marking for security of Iives and property
“As people are addressed the way they are dressed and Imolites having been desirous of seeing that proper identifiable signage for street naming is commenced for ease of commerce.
So, be it resolved by this honourable House to urge the Governor of Imo State to direct the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructural Development or any other relevant government Agency to embark on the use of proper identifiable signage for street naming in Imo State in order to boost sustainable development and strengthen security architecture.
Supporting the motion, the member for Ohaji/Egbema Constituency, Hon. Uzoma Osuoha opined that the motion should not only cover the naming of streets, but also buildings for easy identification.
The Deputy Minority Leader and Lawmaker for Owerri Municipal Constituency, Hon. Clinton Amadi stated that proper Signage and direction helps to create sanity and maintenance of Law and order in the society.
Speaking also, the Ehime Mbano lawmaker, Bernard Ozoemenam advocated the use of proper Signage and Street Naming to recognize individuals who have contributed towards the growth and development of the State.
After the contributions, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe put the motion to vote, and the Ayes had it without any opposing voice.
