To tackle insecurity: Imo Assembly amends State Security Organization Law to establish vigilante groups in communities 

The Imo State House of Assembly has amended the Imo State Security Organization Law No 2 of 2021.

This took place on Tuesday when the Bill was presented by the Member Representing Owerri West State Constituency, and Majority Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi.

Speaking, Kanayo pointed out that the amendment is geared towards ensuring the establishment of a Vigilante Group in every community in Imo State.

“What is to be amended in the Law is to insert a new sub-section (5) to the Section 6 of the principal Law, which is, “6(5) There shall be establishment in every community in Imo State a Vigilante group”.

Identifying insecurity as a challenge that must be addressed headlong in the state, through diverse measures, the lawmaker added that boosting the State internal security architecture, particularly in the rural areas, will aid achieve that.

He maintained that the amendment was to widen the scope of the State Security Organization in other to give room for the operation of Vigilante Groups in providing adequate security for all the communities in the State.

Recalling that the primary responsibility of the Government is to secure lives and properties, the Owerri West representative hunted that Governor Hope Uzodimma is doing everything in his power to ensure such for the people, adding that the amendment of the Law is part of it.

He reiterated that ones the amendment is assented to by the Governor, that it would to a large extent, complement the efforts of the State Government in stalling insecurity in the State.

Most of the legislators spoke in favour of the bill, saying that it is a right step in the right direction.

The Bill was passed, and the Speaker, Rt Hon. Chike Olemgbe, directed the Clerk of the House to send a copy of it to the Governor for final assent
