Tinubu, Otti Meet at Aso Villa Amid Renewed Push for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Tuesday met with Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, in what sources suggest may be part of ongoing efforts to secure the release of the detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

Although the Presidency did not disclose the official agenda of the closed-door meeting, insiders told Vanguard that discussions were likely centered on the legal and political pathways being explored to resolve Kanu’s prolonged detention.

The meeting comes days after Governor Otti visited Kanu at the Sokoto Correctional Centre, where the IPOB leader is serving a life sentence following his November 20, 2025 conviction on terrorism-related charges. The governor’s visit was described as part of a coordinated strategy involving both political engagement and legal action.

Otti was accompanied to the prison by a delegation that included Kanu’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu; the Abia State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ikechukwu Uwanna (SAN); his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ferdinand Ekeoma; as well as officials of the Sokoto State Government.

Governor Otti has repeatedly emphasized that finding a lasting and lawful resolution to Kanu’s case remains a priority for his administration. Following the prison visit, he reaffirmed his commitment to pursuing a previously agreed strategy to secure Kanu’s release.

“While Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is free to appeal his conviction, I’m happy to inform you that I have activated, and will continue to work on, the already agreed strategy until his freedom is secured,” Otti said through his media aide.
